Cardinal Tetra

Paracheirodon axelrodi

The Cardinal Tetra is one of the most iconic freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Its brilliant neon-blue stripe runs the full length of the body, paired with a vivid red band below — more intensely coloured than the similar Neon Tetra. Found in the blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins, these fish thrive in soft, acidic water with subdued lighting.
